Litter Training Your Bunny

I was not always a free range bunny.  But for the last 3 years, I’ve had access to the entire house.  My litter habits are very consistent.  Here are some of my tips for litter training your bunny:

1. It is easier to train a bunny that has been fixed.

2. Find out where bunny likes to go. Most bunnies prefer to go in one or two spots. Once you figure out bunny’s favorite spot, put a litter box there. We use litter called Yesterday’s News, which is very safe for bunnies.

3. Put a layer of hay on top of the litter. Bunnies are multi-taskers…we love to eat and do our business at the same time!

4. Some bunny parents clean every other day or every few days. I have trained my mom to clean my litter boxes once a day. If my boxes get too full, I tend to rebel and leave surprise presents.

5. If there are presents lying around (this is especially true of our fosters), mom will sweep the presents into a dustpan and show bunny. While bunny is watching, mom will put the presents into the box. We don’t know how effective this method is but bunnies are intelligent so it doesn’t hurt to show bunny what we would like him or her to do.
