Helping Bunny Through GI Stasis

It is a serious problem when bunny stops eating and no longer poops. This is known as GI stasis and must be treated right away. My best advice is to take your bunny to the vet. If your vet’s office is not open, there are steps you can take to care for your bunny until you are able to get professional help.

Oxbow makes 3 flavors of Critical Care – Apple Banana, Papaya and Anise. Apple Banana and Anise come in green packaging while Papaya comes in brown.

In addition to Critical Care, we suggest baby gas drops and unflavored Pedialyte to keep bunny hydrated.

Bunny’s normal temperature should be around 101F to 103F. If your bunny’s temperature drops, she is in danger of becoming hypothermic and must be warmed up immediately. While an ear thermometer may not be as accurate as one used rectally, you can use one to get baseline that will tell you if bunny’s temperature has dropped. We use this one. It’s quite easy to use.

You can heat bunny up by using a heat pad or an electric blanket (be sure to cover the cord). The heat pad will stay warm for quite some time, including the car ride to the vet’s. For added support during the ride, we also use one that plugs into the car.
